Blinds protect from the sun or dangerous UV rays and regulate the temperature on hot summer days or cool autumn evenings. Besides, they prevent damage to the house from the sun or heat and shape the appearance of the house. Blinds are highly exposed to UV radiation, usually last for 10 to 15 years and should be serviced every 7 to 8 years by a blinds fitter or blinds installer.
Read more about the perfect sun protection from the inside and from the outside in our article "Sun Protection: How to Shade Your Home and Enjoy the Sun".
The cost of blinds depends on the material and labor. Ceiling mounting or wall mounting is easier and therefore cheaper than ceiling rafter mounting, for example, under a sloping wooden beam. Facade insulation complicates the work, gives more to do and costs more. All costs and prices in this article are estimates for sample jobs and may vary from your project. If you want to know exactly, ask certified blinds fitters or installers from our partner network.

Free-standing blinds are available in flexible and robust designs. Expect to pay 5,000 to 6,000 Swiss francs (flexible) or 8,000 to 10,000 Swiss francs (robust) for a 5-by-4.5-meter motorized blind (without app, radio or sensors) made of standard cloth, including installation. If you want colors other than the standard ones, that costs 5 to 10 percent extra.
In the size specifications, the first number stands for the width and the second number for the extension. The freestanding blind in our example is 5 meters wide and can be rolled out up to 4.5 meters.
Articulated arm blinds are the most widespread sun blinds in Switzerland. They are available in three versions: open, with roof or with cassette. For a 6 by 3 meter motorized folding-arm blind (without app, radio and sensors) made of standard fabric, you should roughly calculate with 3,500 Swiss francs (open), 4,000 Swiss francs (with roof) or 4,500 Swiss francs (with cassette).
Side blinds can be mounted horizontally, for example on the roof or on a beam, and vertically, for example on a wall or a support post. Calculate for a 3 by 2 meter horizontally mounted side blind with 1,500 Swiss francs without zipper or 2,000 Swiss francs with zipper. A 2 by 2.5 meter vertically mounted side blind costs about 1,500 Swiss francs.
Telescopic arm blinds work similarly to articulated arm blinds and are suitable for larger areas up to 100 square meters. They are usually mounted with a roof or with a cassette and can cost up to twice as much as folding arm blinds. Therefore, calculate for a 6 by 3 meter motorized telescopic arm blind (without app, radio and sensors) made of standard cloth with up to 8,000 Swiss francs (with roof) or up to 9,000 Swiss francs (with cassette).
Blinds are usually offered with a motor. That is, the semi-automatic control of the blinds is included in our estimates. If you do without the semi-automatic control of the blinds, you can expect a discount of 200-300 Swiss francs. Whether it is worth it, you have to decide. However, keep in mind that you can no longer operate blinds 6 meters or wider with the good old hand crank. The semi-automatic blind control is wired and mounted like a light switch. If you want to operate the blind remotely, you have to expect an additional cost of 200 to 300 Swiss francs.
You can automate your blinds with sensors. They automatically extend as soon as the sun shines and raise on their own when it rains or winds. The sensors communicate with the blinds via cable or radio and can be easily programmed with a smartphone. A sensor package for sun and wind costs 500 to 750 Swiss francs, and a package for rain, sun and wind costs 1,000 to 1,500 Swiss francs. Of course, you can also integrate the blinds into a smart home system.
