Masons are specialists in conversion projects. For example, they tear down walls, ceilings or floors and change rooms or protect you in the garden from prying eyes with a stone wall. In addition, they take over smaller work in the house such as plastering walls, on the house such as repairing facades or in the garden such as laying slabs for walkways - or major work in expansion, renovation or conversion projects.
How much does a mason cost in Switzerland?
The hourly rate ranges from 70 to 90 Swiss francs for a trained mason with a federal certificate of proficiency. Depending on the project, a master who is supported by one or more apprentices or learners is sufficient, which of course cost less than a trained mason.
How much do masonry work in the house cost?
When you tear down a wall, you change more than the floor plan of the house or apartment. For example, if you remove a wall and turn the small kitchen into a spacious kitchen or insert a wall and divide the second large bedroom into a children’s room and a home office. A few typical masonry works in the house:
Opening a wall is expensive, especially if the wall is load-bearing. This must be clarified with a structural engineer, because walls are not always bricked as planned. The cost of opening a load-bearing wall is higher. For a 5 square meter wall (2 meters wide x 2.40 meters high), calculate 7,500 to 15,000 Swiss francs* for planning, statics and preparation, supporting wall penetration, installing lintel, disposing of construction debris, covering wall openings and new floors and skirting boards.
Inserting a wall costs 20 to 25 Swiss francs* per square meter for one up to 12,5 centimetres thick, non-load-bearing lightweight wall or drywall - or 550 to 600 Swiss francs* per cubic metre for a wall of up to 30 centimetres thick and load-bearing made of Porotherm or wall block made of aerated concrete in the shell. In addition, there are the costs for plastering.
Plastering a wall costs about 25 Swiss francs* per square meter for standard or 25 to 40 Swiss francs* per square meter for special plaster. If you cover the wall with tiles, natural stone slabs or wallpaper, simple standard plaster is sufficient; if you paint the wall, you should afford a special plaster.
A basement seal prevents moisture from entering and mould from forming in the masonry. Sealing concrete joints costs 60 to 120 Swiss francs* per linear metre, while the base plates for water and thermal insulation cost around 2,000 to 5,000 Swiss francs* for a single-family house.
* These are only guidelines. They vary according to effort, material and standard.

How much do masonry work on the house cost?
Masons, for example, plaster house facades and build wall extensions. The costs depend strongly on the effort and the material. A few typical masonry works on the house:
A scaffolding costs 10 to 25 Swiss francs* per square meter of facade (including scaffold construction).
Facade cleaning with a high-pressure cleaner costs 50 to 70 Swiss francs* per hour.
Minor repairsto the plaster cost plus/minus 50 Swiss francs* per square meter.
A new plaster costs 50 to 150 Swiss francs per square meter. More expensive dispersion paint is more weather resistant and usually lasts longer than the cheaper one.
An extension costs 3,000 to 4,000 Swiss francs* per square meter. This amounts, for example, to 75,000 to 100,000 Swiss francs* for a 25-square-metre single-storey extension with a terrace. For larger and/or more complex projects, you may need a builder.
A brick garage is more solid and stable than other garages. A garage with a parking space costs up to 20,000 Swiss francs* for the work including the foundation and the material. If you have an electric car, you should install a wallbox, which you ideally connect to the photovoltaic system. Simple e-charging stations are available from 750 Swiss francs.
* These are only guidelines. They vary according to effort, material and standard.
How much do masonry work in the garden cost?
Masons also take over work in garden design such as garden walls, walkways or retaining walls, replace individual stones or slabs and repair entire walls or paths. They also prepare formwork for concrete foundations or concrete walls and cast the foundations, supporting pillars or walls by hand or with machines. A few typical masonry works in the garden:
A natural stone wall costs about 200 to 250 Swiss francs* per square meter for excavator, excavator operator, natural stone, backfill, concrete as well as material transport. In addition, there are labor costs for the mason of 70 to 90 francs per hour.
A concrete garden wall costs about 500 Swiss francs* per square meter. A concrete wall six meters long and one meter high costs plus/minus 3,000 Swiss francs*. The formwork and foundation cost the most. Then there are the costs for the excavator and the earthwork.
A walkway costs 80 to 120 Swiss francs* per square meter for the substructure and slabs - or significantly more. Then there are the labor costs. Concrete slabs (15 to 45 Swiss francs* per square meter) are cheaper than paving stones (15 to 65 Swiss francs* per square meter), and natural stone is the most expensive.
* These are only guidelines. They vary according to effort, material and standard.
