The boundaries between roofing and tinsmithing are fluid. That is why many companies employ both roofers and tinsmiths. Roofers cover the roof, tinsmiths perform all work that has to do with sheet metal. These are the most common tinsmith jobs:
Tinsmiths are responsible for all sheet metal work on and on the roof. For example, they install lightning conductors, gutters, drain pipes and chimney covers. They also cover skylights, dormers and chimneys with sheet metal. They also install solar systems, but without the electrical connection. In addition, they are able to install prefabricated components such as skylights or drainage systems for terraces and seal roofs and house walls.

Tinsmiths are the specialists for sheet metal work on roofs and facades. They process various materials such as anodized aluminum, galvanized sheet metal or copper. Aluminum and galvanized steel sheet are especially popular for residential buildings. Such sheet metal coverings are not only modern and durable, but also easy to maintain. Moreover, like other materials, they can be insulated, for example, with hemp or mineral wool.
Hourly rates for tinsmiths range from 70 to 120 Swiss francs. For simpler work, the following indicative prices can be expected: A gutter costs about 90 to 120 Swiss francs per meter, a snow guard about 30 to 50 Swiss francs per meter. The cost of a chimney flashing is about 300 to 400 Swiss francs. Prices for skylights or dormers vary widely and can range from 1,500 to 10,000 Swiss francs. If your roof is tiled, another 1,500 Swiss francs or so will be added.
