Roofers make wooden structures for roof trusses and cover roofs with panels, shingles or tiles. They seal pitched and flat roofs, install lightning conductors, skylights, gutters, downspouts, skylight domes, rain gutters or snow guard systems, install solar systems and prepare all connections for electricians. In addition, they insulate house roofs and attics with heat-insulating insulation layers and vapor barrier elements or green flat roofs, if desired.
Roofs last for about 50 years and should be inspected annually. This prolongs their life and reduces the risk of costly damage. During inspections, roofers seal cracks and replace broken panels or tiles. If too many panels or tiles need to be replaced, renovation is a good idea. If the roof is not yet thermally insulated, you should have the roof, attic and facade insulated. Energy renovations are financially supported by the federal government and the cantons.
Most roofers charge 70 to 100 Swiss francs an hour. Expect to pay 25,000 to 60,000 Swiss francs for a new roof, including substructure and insulation. Under-rafter insulation (40 to 80 Swiss francs per square meter) or between-rafter insulation (60 to 150 Swiss francs per square meter) are the cheapest, while above-rafter insulation (150 to 250 Swiss francs per square meter) is the most expensive. Re-roofing costs 80 to 125 Swiss francs per square meter, and replacing the roof truss 140 to 280 Swiss francs per square meter.
