A metal carport is cheaper, easier to maintain and more durable than one made of wood. Galvanised steel and anodised aluminium are rust-proof, withstand wind and weather and can be powder-coated. The lightfast coating does not fade in UV light and still looks like new even after decades. Because a metal carport can carry loads of up to 200+ kilograms, you can, for example, green it or mount a photovoltaic system on the roof.
A wooden carport costs less than one made of metal, but it is more susceptible to humidity, insects or weathering and requires more maintenance. Native wood such as spruce or larch contains a lot of tree resin and is more resistant than other woods. The wood should be pre-treated and must be treated with wood preservative every two years. Pay attention to the load-bearing capacity (at least 85 kilograms per square metre).
